Many health organizations all over the world advise us to eat fish at least once week. Preferably we should eat fat fish like salmon. It's a pretty hard job to catch one yourself, but fortunately there are many fish farms where your salmon is efficiently fed to perfect size and weight like in Norway. All camera controlled. No feed is wasted.
Whether you like your salmon smoked, fried, poached or nicely sliced as sashimi, before you get it on your plate at the diner table, millions had to spend their lives properly fed first in one of the many fishery farms in Norway. For these farms the cost of feed is the primary overhead. Up to five kilos of feed are needed for every kilo of bodyweight gained by the fish. With a kilo of feed costing roughly one euro, rearing hundreds of thousands of fish is a capital-intensive business. Hence the highest feeding efficiency is required. On many salmon farms however, much of the expensive feed is wasted. The reason being that conventional feeding systems dispense pellets at set intervals and scatter them evenly across surface of the enclosure. By contrast, salmon eat at irregular times and often gather in dense shoals in one part of their cage. Feed distributed at the wrong time or in the wrong place simply sinks to the seabed uneaten. And the fishery’s profits go down with it.
Feeding solution provider Steinsvik therefore wanted a way of matching feed delivery to demand. Steinsvik is a supplier of equipment that is essential for profitable, sustainable and safe operation of fish farms. The fish farming industry is growing and efficient feeding is an important success factor.
Working with Steinsvik engineers, we integrated its EVE ONE video encoders with advanced imaging hardware to create a comprehensive system capable of continuously monitoring feed dispersal and availability. An operator monitors the feeding process from his control room ashore. Both underwater and surface cameras stream analogue video signals to the digital EVE encoders. A sophisticated algorithm then uses the digitized data for real-time mapping of fish distribution. The feeding system control software constantly repositions the boom-mounted cameras, following the fish around the cages. As well as optimizing performance, the use of responsive technology reduces the amount of valuable hardware required.
The EVE One analogue video to digital encoders can be used straight out of the box. They are simply clocked onto a DIN rail connecting the cameras and the one-channel video encoders are ready for operation. Encoders get their own address in the IP network and can be accessed through their device host name. An intuitive web app will guide the user through the interface and set-up.
